Ed Rae To Receive Spirit of the Game Award
Ed Rae of Westwood was joined by eight other honorees at the 6th annual MSRC Awards Banquet, held in Westboro on August 10. Rae was presented with the Spirit of the Game Award for his distinguished career and outstanding contribution to soccer refereeing spanning more than 30 years.
Others receiving awards during the evening included newly announced Young Referees of the Year Cory Cloutier of Charlton and Morganne Gagne of Medfield, and Adult Referee of the Year Doug Coutts of Millis. Not able to attend was Flannery Award winner Al Cosentino of Billerica.
Also announced at the ceremony were Andy Rademaker, Ralph Schaeffer, Tom Heinz and Ken Mattes and Assessor; Assignor; Administrator; and Instructor of the Year, respectively.
Quoting James Joyce, W.B, Yeats, and T.S. Elliott among others, Rae was both humble and gracious in his acceptance of the crystal trophy, and clearly touched by the presentation. Directing his comments to the younger referees in attendance, he emphasized the need to enjoy the task of refereeing itself, and not to seek extrinsic rewards.
About 80 members of the soccer community were in attendance. Dinner, drinks and overall camaraderie were the order of the day. Emcee Noel Cotterell eloquently summed up the theme of the evening, noting that in the end what matters most are the people we come in to contact with through this game, and how fulfilling those relationships have become for all of us.
